Half Term Sailing

A group of Sailfish and Race Squad sailors enjoyed 2 days of sailing over the half term holiday thanks to Peter Dewhurst, Paul Graham, Arthur Simon and Kirt volunteering their time.

Day one saw the young sailors learning all about the importance of a good start to a race and the best way of achieving this. Peter also gave a debriefing and identified individual areas for improvement which everyone found really helpful.

Day two involved learning all about team racing, everyone had a really good time and learnt a lot and would like to do this again.

If there are any adult sailors who would like to become more involved with training our young sailors please let us know, we hope to develop more in 2012 and look forward to an exciting year.

A really good day, well done to everyone who took part and worked really hard in their teams.

Burwain A - Simon, Alex, Matt, Finn, George, Jodie and Julie finished in 12th place, last year the A boat came 16th.

Burwain Bullets team Jamie, Nicholas, Jade, Tom B, Tom C, Kady-Jo, Jordon and Amelia finished in 28th well done as this team had a lot of setbacks in very difficult conditions for our younger sailors. We had to take the boat out of the water 4 times to empty it and I am very proud of our sailors that just kept trying. I am looking forward to the next event we can take part in as a team.

Finally on behalf of us all I would like to say a big thank you to James and Tom for letting us use their boats and to all the parents for taking us. And I would like to apologise on behalf of the A team for the damage caused to James boat by less experienced competitors.

Not the best video in the world, but hopefully you can see how Matt is able to keep the boat flat by letting out the main sheet when gusts start he heel the boat.

Burwain Sailfish SC put up a great team effort to grab 6th place in difficult conditions ranging from rain and no wind to no rain and no wind.
Our team of varied experience and age were not phased by a slow start in difficult wind conditions. They persevered with some excellent sailing partnerships demonstrating just how far we have come. Last year a few of the team wouldn't have considered themselves capable of helming or crewing for so long.

I think our performance demonstrated the clubs, the juniors and the parents commitment to building a club which has strength in depth and our sailors, both on and off the water, were a credit to us all.

Well done everyone.

Simon, Tom, Charlotte, and James headed to Nantwich today for the first Junior Traveller Series race of the year. The weather was perfect for a great day sailing with a mixed fleet including Laser Radials, Toppers, and Mirrors. James finished 7th overall and was the highest placed Topper; Charlotte finished 11th, and was in the top half of the Toppers racing; and Simon and James finished 15th, and were the 2nd placed Mirror. Excellent results all round.

The next Junior Traveller is at Elton on Easter Saturday (23rd April). It's only 45 minutes from Burwain, so why not join us for a great day out? Any junior boat is welcome, including Toppers, Lasers, Mirros, Teras, and Optimists.

Burwain is the OnBoard Club for 2010

Burwain was chosen as the Northwest OnBoard club of 2010 at today's annual review meeting at Hollingworth SC.

The award was largely down to the success of the Bug Day Regatta in July, the first OnBoard event to be held at a sailing club as opposed to a sailing centre.

Burwain's support of other OnBoard events was also recognised, so well done to all those who ventured out to represent the club at Hollingworth and Salford.

Yours truly also picked up the volunteer award for the year so it was a double win for Burwain.

Adam McGovern also reported that this would be his last season as our OnBoard and RYA coach as he has been promoted to be the RYA Development and Pathways Officer for Scotland and is off to Edinburgh within the next couple of weeks. I took the opportunity to thank Adam on behalf of Burwain and wish him all the best in his new role. Adam has been a key figure in getting Burwain to where it is today and he will be sorely missed next year by all.

ONBOARD YOUNGSTERS MAKE A SPLASH AT SALFORD

There was fun both on and off the water at the OnBoard Fun Festival on

29th October at Salford Watersports Centre. 10 teams of youngsters from

across the Region completed a range of wet and dry challenges on a

mild day with good breezes.

47 children of ages five up to 17 came in teams from Burwain Sailing

Club, Salford Junior Sailing Club, Hollingworth Lake Activity Club, West

Lancashire Yacht Club, Astbury Sailsports and Glossop Sailing Club. All

the children had learned to sail with the RYA’s OnBoard initiative, and all

were keen to show off their skills in friendly competition.

The Fun Festival was the final event in the Manchester OnBoard series,

and in teams of three to six kids, the teams joined in a number of tricky

challenges. In one, the child steering the boat was blindfolded, and

had to sail guided only by the instructions of his/ her non blindfolded

team mate. Onshore, there was nappy racing, with kids wearing their

buoyancy aids round their legs, and regularly tripping up! There was

conventional fleet racing on the water, in which each team selected their

champion to go into battle against the other team reps.

In all there were eight types of race, and five of the ten teams won one or

more events, so competition was keen. The winning team were Astbury

Popular, while Hollingworth and Burwain both showed promise in the

fleet racing. West Lancashire took the award for youngest team, after

including children as young as five in their team!

The organiser, RYA OnBoard Development Officer Adam McGovern

said, “The weather gods seemed to be with us, which made for a

fantastic day’s racing. It was great to see so many teams, plus such

young kids joining in the fun. It was a really good way to finish the

OnBoard season here in the Manchester area.”
Run by the RYA, OnBoard is a grass roots programme which introduces

sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools,

youth groups and training centres.

Topper 6hr race

Three Sailfish teams entered the Topper 6 hour race at Leigh & Lowton SC on August Bank Holiday Monday. There were 11 teams in all, with sailors coming from around the North of England. The race started at 10am in an 8 knot Westerly breeze & sunshine, before dying around lunch time. Honours went to Sink and Swim (Charlotte, Megan, Olivia, and Victoria), who started well and kept their lead over Black and Blue (James, Jamie, and Tom) and GTS (Simon, George, and Connor) for all but a brief spell in the middle of the race.

BUGS TAKE FLIGHT ON WINDIEST DAY AT BURWAIN

60 children from clubs all over the region came to enjoy a festival of sailing at Burwain Sailing Club, Colne, on Sunday 11^th July. The children came from six clubs in the North Manchester area, where the RYA OnBoard initiative is successfully introducing many youngsters to the sport of sailing. Brisk, dry weather made ideal conditions for this OnBoard Laser Bug Day.

In fact, this was the windiest OnBoard event yet in the Region but the young sailors were quickly at home in the little Bug dinghies, and were soon flying round the lake in the morning practice session. There were games on land as well for the fun fleet, while the more experienced sailors prepared to join the racing fleet in the afternoon.

With winds of up to 20mph, there was no shortage of excitement in the afternoon as racing started. Three races produced three different winners. Alex Dunston,15, took the first race, but James Grummett, 11, improved with every race, and a win in the last race helped him to win overall by just two points from Lauren Smith,14, from Salford Junior Sailing Club, who sailed very consistently. Alex took third place overall.

Meanwhile the fun sailors enjoyed some team relay races, and Team Hollybees ended up on top, with Team Actimal in second.

The sailors were sailing a fleet of 30 Laser Bug dinghies, kindly loaned for the day by sponsor Laser Performance.

The OnBoard Bug Day was a great day for competition between the OnBoard clubs in the Manchester North area, and teams came from Sailing Clubs at Burwain, Glossop, Hollingworth Lake and Salford, plus from two activity centres, Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre and Astbury Sailsports. The attendance, of 60 kids, was nearly 50% up on last year’s event, showing the growing popularity of OnBoard in the area.

One of the kids, Charlotte Gatty, from Burwain, said, “Today was awesome; I was so excited this morning!”

Excited that morning for another reason was organiser Adam McGovern, the RYA OnBoard Development Officer. “I was a bit nervous when I woke up to see how windy it was. But the kids amazed me, they sailed so well in such difficult conditions. What was even better was that they all loved the windy conditions!”

The prize giving went with a swing helped by generous doses of prizes from two sponsors, Laser Performance and Harken. There were plenty of individual prizes as well as the overall ones above. Burwain sailors Olivier Bates and Charlotte Gatty received prizes for the most improved sailors. In the brisk breezes, capsizes were common, and Nathan Smith and Jack Monaghan, both of Glossop Sailing Club, were awarded the Endurance prize for carrying on after the most capsizes. Astbury’s Owen Maccuish received a prize for his Almost Perfect Start.

Here is an example of roll tacking from you tube in a boat not that dissimilar from a GP.

Out of the many examples to look at I though that this one showed most clearly the helm and crew heeling the boat to windward and then moving across at the same time to right the boat after the tack.

There are plenty of Topper examples to look at too.

Alex Dunston, crewing for Innes Armstrong, claimed 2nd spot in the Gold fleet at this weeks GP Open in what was a close competition in variable winds.

3 other Sailfishers also competed to a high standard, demonstrating just how well our Sailfish juniors are improving.

James Grummett crewed into 5th place and first in the Silver fleet, George Graham into 7th place, second in the Silver fleet and Tom Blackburn into 11th place.

Well done to George how helmed for a large parts of the race and Tom, who after capsizing before the start of the first race, spent the rest of the day very wet!

Well done and keep it up.

Blacko School Go Sailing

Children from Blacko Primary School voted to go sailing when their school was being used as a polling station.

17 children from years 2 & 3 took to the water in the clubs Toppers and Tera's eventually to be blown back on shore as the winds increased. However, it would take more than strong winds to keep this group off the water, as everyone returned to the water for the afternoon session in the clubs Wanderers.

Well done to everyone who took part in what turned out to be a fun day's sailing and for showing such courage and resilience in your first sailing adventure!
